What Does IP67 Mean for an Off-Grid Communicator? A Buyer’s Evidence Guide

An IP67 label can reassure buyers who expect rain, dust or accidental water exposure. It can also be misread as proof that a product is waterproof, drop-proof and suitable for every outdoor environment.
IEC 60529 classifies degrees of protection provided by electrical-equipment enclosures. The first IP numeral concerns solid-object ingress and the second concerns water ingress under defined tests.
This guide explains how to review an IP claim. It does not state that J25 or a future ChatField product is IP67.
Short answer
IP67 indicates a defined enclosure-protection classification when the exact product has been evaluated according to IEC 60529. The “6” is the highest solid-ingress numeral and is commonly described as dust-tight. The “7” concerns the effects of temporary immersion under the applicable test conditions.
It does not mean permanent underwater operation, saltwater resistance, steam-jet cleaning, drop resistance, corrosion resistance or continued protection after damage.
IP describes the enclosure
The rating addresses how the enclosure protects against solid objects and water. It does not certify radio range, battery safety, software, PTT quality or overall manufacturing readiness.
A campaign should attach the rating to the exact enclosure and configuration tested.

Read the first numeral
Independent laboratory guidance based on IEC 60529 explains that the first numeral ranks protection against solid objects on a scale ending at 6. An IP6X result addresses dust ingress under the specified test.
Do not infer protection against every powder, chemical or conductive contaminant. The test material, pressure conditions and enclosure preparation matter.
Ask for the actual report rather than a chart copied from another website.
Read the second numeral
The second numeral classifies water-ingress protection. IPX7 concerns temporary immersion effects under a defined procedure. IPX8 is a different classification with conditions agreed for the product.
IP67 should not be advertised as indefinite submersion. It also does not automatically include every lower water-jet or high-pressure-cleaning condition unless the applicable assessment supports those claims.
A rainstorm, river drop, hose, surf and hot wash are different exposures.
Ports and covers matter
A product may meet its rating only when charging covers, card doors, connectors, screws and seals are properly closed and undamaged. The manual should state the required enclosure condition.
Test users must understand how to inspect and close every cover. A missing gasket or debris on a seal can change protection.

New samples and used devices can differ
A laboratory sample may be new. Field devices experience drops, abrasion, ultraviolet exposure, temperature cycles, opening, repair and seal aging.
Ask whether environmental conditioning occurs before ingress testing and what inspection or seal-replacement schedule applies. Do not assume the original rating survives physical damage.
A warranty should explain how water ingress and damaged seals are handled.
Water type matters
Fresh laboratory water does not prove resistance to saltwater, chlorinated water, mud, fuel, detergent or other liquids. Corrosion and chemical compatibility require separate consideration.
For marine work, request salt-fog, corrosion and material evidence appropriate to the use. Do not convert an IP67 result into a “marine-grade” claim.

Temperature matters
Cold, heat and rapid temperature change can affect seals and pressure. Condensation can occur without the same exposure as an immersion test.
Ask for operating and storage limits and any temperature conditioning included in the report. Keep IP, temperature and thermal-shock results separate.
IP is not impact protection
The letters IP refer to ingress protection, not impact protection. Drop and mechanical-impact performance use other procedures and standards.
A device can resist dust and temporary immersion yet fail after a severe drop. Ask for drop height, surface, orientation, sample count and post-drop function where ruggedness is claimed.
Do not treat a rugged-looking enclosure as test evidence.
IP is not an FCC or CE substitute
FCC equipment authorization concerns U.S. radio requirements. An IP report concerns enclosure ingress protection. European market requirements and product safety involve additional documentation.
One certificate should never be used to imply all compliance categories.
The current J25 product page identifies FCC evidence for J25 but does not currently publish an IP67 claim.
Verify the laboratory and report
Request the report number, issuing laboratory, standard edition, test date, client, model, photographs, sample condition, result and authorized use of the laboratory name or mark.
Check that the report belongs to the finished enclosure, not only a connector, empty case or earlier design. Compare external photographs and labels with the reward product.
If the report is confidential, request a suitable summary that still establishes model, standard, rating and date.
Test production consistency
Seals, adhesives, fasteners, molding and assembly affect ingress protection. A successful prototype test does not automatically prove every production unit.
Ask how gaskets are inspected, covers are verified, torque is controlled and failed units are handled. Changes in enclosure supplier or tooling may require review.

- Exact finished-product model and hardware revision
- Claimed IP code and IEC 60529 edition
- Report number, date and issuing laboratory
- External photographs matching the product
- Ports, covers, screws and accessories in tested state
- Dust-test method and result
- Water-test method, depth, duration and result
- Preconditioning, temperature and sample history
- Instructions for seals, inspection and drying
- Separate evidence for drop, corrosion and temperature
- Production quality controls for enclosure assembly
- Warranty treatment of water ingress and damaged seals
Questions for a crowdfunding campaign
- Has the final enclosure been tested or only a prototype?
- Which exact model and revision appear in the report?
- Was testing performed with every cover closed?
- Which standard edition and laboratory were used?
- Does the claim cover the supplied charging accessories?
- What water depth and duration apply?
- Are saltwater, drops and temperature changes separately tested?
- How are seals inspected during production?
- Will enclosure design change before fulfillment?
- When will backers see model-specific evidence?
ChatField ingress boundary
The current public J25 specifications should be used for verified J25 claims. No IP67 rating should be inferred from product appearance, FCC evidence or off-grid positioning.
Use the ChatField contact page to request current environmental evidence. Until a model-specific report exists, future crowdfunding materials should describe protection conservatively rather than publish an unsupported IP code.
