Solar Farm Field Communication Beyond Cell Coverage: An O&M Route Test

Utility-scale photovoltaic sites can extend across long rows, perimeter roads, gates, inverter or power-conversion stations, substations, drainage areas and changing terrain. Cellular service may vary across the route, while operations and maintenance teams still need a clear method for selected non-emergency coordination.
A phone-paired local LoRa mesh layer may support equipped users after a site-specific test. It is not SCADA, inverter control, arc-flash protection, lockout/tagout control, an employee alarm or a substitute for the site's approved emergency communication.
Short answer
Begin with the O&M plan, electrical safety program, site access rules and approved communication methods. Map the real work routes and define a small set of permitted messages. Test the exact phones, J25 terminals, regional configuration, carrying positions, checkpoints and fallbacks without entering an energized or restricted area for the demonstration.
Define the O&M task
Preventive inspection, corrective maintenance, vegetation management, storm preparation, security checks, module cleaning, performance investigation and contractor work create different routes and authorities. Do not treat one perimeter test as proof for every task.
Record who owns the asset, who operates it, who authorizes electrical work, which contractors participate and which control center receives status. Keep the communication pilot inside that structure.

Preserve electrical safety first
OSHA notes that solar equipment can generate electricity and workers may face panel, circuit and stored-energy hazards. Applicable lockout/tagout procedures require defined authorized employees, energy-source identification, isolation, control and verification.
A message saying equipment is off is not electrical verification. Do not use an app acknowledgement as permission to approach, test or service energized equipment. Qualified personnel and the site's written procedure control the work.
Keep phones and terminals out of restricted locations where they are not approved.
Separate communication from SCADA
SCADA, plant controllers, monitoring platforms, protection systems and inverter interfaces perform specialized operational functions. J25 does not monitor voltage, current, insulation, temperature, fire, arc flash or equipment condition and does not operate a breaker or inverter.
A field user may send an approved observation or request through the local mesh. The receiving organization must decide how that information enters its work-order, control-room or safety process.
Draw the complete J25 path
The smartphone application is the user interface. Bluetooth connects the phone to the carried J25 terminal. The configured terminal sends supported PTT, text, image or location traffic through the local LoRa mesh to another equipped terminal and paired phone.
The phone alone does not transmit LoRa, and the terminal is not held and used like a conventional walkie-talkie. Review the ChatField How It Works page with field and IT teams.
Map representative route zones
Create checkpoints at the operations building, entrance gate, perimeter corners, central rows, inverter or power-conversion stations, substation approach, spare-parts area, vegetation boundary and safe assembly point. Mark restricted, energized, flooded, steep or vehicle-only areas.
Use existing safe work routes. A communication test never authorizes entry into a prohibited location or exposure to electrical, traffic, heat, storm or wildlife hazards.
Record structures, elevation, vegetation, vehicles, device height and carrying position.
Test routine message classes
Examples may include arrived at checkpoint, inspection complete, route blocked, supervisor requested, photo available, part required and returning to gate. Use the organization's approved terminology and require acknowledgement where the procedure calls for it.
Do not use test traffic for emergency alarms, lockout/tagout authorization or switching instructions. Label every exercise message clearly.
Use range evidence carefully
Current J25 evidence includes 5 km in urban-obstructed testing and up to 10 km in ideal open terrain. A solar site may look open while rows, metal structures, terrain, vegetation, vehicles and carrying position change the path.
Test stable, marginal and failed checkpoints in both directions. Do not convert an open-terrain figure into a guaranteed acreage or site diameter.

Test direct paths before relays
Establish a direct-path baseline between the operations point and each route zone. For current J25 planning, evaluate no more than two participating relay nodes where the tested layout and configuration permit.
Place a participating node only in an approved, accessible position with an assigned owner, power plan and retrieval procedure. Test movement, power loss and a missed acknowledgement.
Do not place a terminal inside electrical equipment or a restricted location to improve coverage.
Reproduce a full O&M shift
Count smartphone and terminal batteries separately. Reproduce the expected mix of supported PTT, text, image and location over the planned shift, including travel, heat, cold and screen use.
Define approved charging points and inspect cables and spares. Do not charge or handle damaged batteries near combustible material or in an unapproved area.
The current J25 product page presents the model, but a short demo does not establish shift endurance.
Protect drivers and equipment operators
No person should operate a phone while driving an O&M vehicle, using mowing or cleaning equipment, working at height, handling tools or performing electrical tasks. NIOSH advises workers who drive to avoid phone use and pull over safely before texting or calling.
Assign a passenger or separate communicator, or require a safe stationary checkpoint. Automation and PTT do not remove cognitive distraction.
Plan for contractors and visitors
Not every contractor or visitor will carry a configured J25 and paired phone. Identify equipped and unequipped roles, onboarding, group membership, temporary access, device return and language needs.
The communication plan must reach every person required by site rules using approved methods. Remove access when work ends and record the handoff.
Exercise storm and blocked-route conditions safely
DOE recommends preventive, pre-storm and post-damage O&M planning. Conduct tabletop and controlled route exercises before severe weather, not during lightning, flooding, high winds, fire or damaged electrical conditions.
Simulate a blocked perimeter road or unavailable inverter-station checkpoint. Measure report time, acknowledgement, reroute authority and fallback without approaching the hazard.

Measure procurement results
Record successful delivery, end-to-end delay, acknowledgement, wrong recipient, stale location, user error, failed checkpoint, battery state, fallback and recovery time. Separate technical delivery from correct human understanding.
A pass applies only to the tested route, users, phones, firmware, regional hardware, weather range and operating procedure. Retest after site expansion, vegetation change, major construction, software change or workflow change.
Set the commercial scope
Request a versioned bill of materials, phone compatibility, documentation, accessories, regional configuration, training, support, sample quantity, test plan and acceptance record. Keep custom application or system development in a separate statement of work.
