Can Field Teams Hear PTT Clearly in Noise? An Intelligibility Test

A push-to-talk message can reach the recipient and still fail the job if the words are not understood. Wind, engines, pumps, traffic, reverberation, distance from the phone, speaker volume, microphone placement, hearing protection and task attention all affect the human result.

Procurement teams should test intelligibility, not only radio range. The test must preserve required hearing protection and safe work practices.

Short answer

Define the exact message, noise condition, PPE, phone, terminal, carrying position and user role. Use a controlled list of short operational phrases with multiple speakers and listeners. Score correct understanding, acknowledgement and action.

Never remove required hearing protection to improve a demonstration. If supported PTT is not understandable, use a safe quiet checkpoint, approved communication headset, short text or another authorized system.

Separate radio delivery from human understanding

The technical path may deliver audio while the worker hears the wrong location, number or instruction. Record at least four stages: PTT setup, audio arrival, words understood and acknowledgement completed.

A pass at the first two stages is not an operational pass. Misunderstood speech can be worse than an obvious failure because the user may act with false confidence.

Control workplace noise first

NIOSH recommends reducing hazardous noise through elimination, substitution, engineering and administrative controls before relying only on hearing protection. Communication testing must not become a reason to tolerate unnecessary noise exposure.

Repair equipment, increase distance, use barriers or enclosures and move nonessential conversation to a quieter area where practicable. Qualified safety personnel determine exposure controls.

A communication product is not a hearing-conservation program.

Keep required hearing protection in place

NIOSH advises selecting and fitting hearing protection for the exposure and considering communication, comfort, compatibility, convenience and cost. Some hearing protectors or communication headsets may support speech in noise.

Test the exact approved protector and fit. Do not substitute ordinary noise-canceling headphones unless they are approved and labeled for the required protection.

Record whether the user wears plugs, muffs, double protection or a communication-integrated protector.

Draw the complete voice path

For current J25 use, the speaker operates the phone application. Bluetooth connects the phone to the carried terminal. The configured J25 mesh carries the supported PTT traffic to the recipient terminal and paired phone.

Test microphone input, phone processing, Bluetooth pairing, radio path, recipient phone output, speaker or headset and listener understanding as separate stages.

Freeze the test configuration

Record phone models, operating systems, app version, firmware, regional hardware, terminal identifiers, audio accessories, volume settings and carrying positions. Disable unrelated notifications that would not be permitted during the test.

Do not compare one phone on speaker with another using an approved headset and call the result a radio comparison. Keep configurations matched or document the difference.

Choose representative noise conditions

List the actual work zones: quiet office, windy open area, vehicle cab, generator, pump, machinery, traffic, crowd or reverberant building. Measure or characterize noise using the organization's qualified process.

NIOSH identifies repeated exposure at 85 dBA or higher as hazardous and recommends a hearing-loss prevention program until exposure is reduced below that level. This threshold concerns exposure risk, not a universal PTT test level.

Do not expose workers to hazardous noise solely for product testing.

Build a word and phrase list

Use short phrases that resemble the job but do not create a real instruction: Test 17, Gate Blue, Pump Four stopped, Route East closed and return to checkpoint. Include letters, numbers and similar-sounding words.

Randomize the order so listeners cannot guess from a memorized sequence. Use enough items to reveal repeated errors.

Label every transmission as test traffic.

Use multiple speakers and listeners

Voice pitch, accent, speed, microphone distance and hearing ability vary. Include representative trained users without collecting unnecessary personal information.

Ask the listener to repeat the message exactly before seeing the answer. Record correct, partially correct, wrong and not heard.

Do not score an operator's interpretation after the fact as a successful delivery.

Test microphone position and wind

Verify the phone or approved microphone position used in real work. Test wind direction and protection without covering the microphone in an unapproved way.

Do not hold the J25 terminal like a conventional walkie-talkie. The current J25 product page presents a carried terminal with the phone as interface.

Record whether the speaker is stationary, walking or safely stopped.

Test recipient audio options

Compare approved phone speaker, earpiece or communication accessory where supported and safe. Verify compatibility with hard hats, eye protection, respirators and hearing protection.

NIOSH notes that PPE can interfere with other equipment fit and that special communication technologies may help in loud environments. Selection still requires exposure and fit review.

Do not increase volume beyond safe or approved limits to force a pass.

Test PTT setup and clipping

Train speakers to wait for the supported setup indication before speaking and to keep the microphone position consistent. Record clipped first words, delayed audio and truncated endings.

Use a standard opening word and message number. If setup delay varies with route or traffic, include it in the acceptance result.

Test route and range separately

Begin at close range to establish an audio baseline. Then move to representative checkpoints and repeat the same phrases. A change can result from radio delivery, phone audio or environmental noise.

Current J25 evidence includes 5 km in urban-obstructed testing and up to 10 km in ideal open terrain. Those distances do not guarantee understandable speech at a noisy worksite.

Record stable, marginal and failed results in both directions.

Include supported relay paths

After direct tests, evaluate no more than two participating relay nodes for current J25 planning where the tested layout and configuration permit. Use the same word list and noise conditions.

Measure additional setup or delivery effects and test a controlled relay loss. Do not infer a guaranteed total range.

Assign a responsible person and power plan to every participating node.

Reproduce peak traffic

Several users may attempt PTT, text or location updates during shift change or an incident. Run a safe representative traffic script and measure busy behavior, delay, missed setup and message order.

Keep required emergency communication on its approved system. Never overload an operational channel for a demonstration.

Record the last intended recipient and human acknowledgement.

Define closed-loop acknowledgement

For important operational test messages, the recipient should repeat the key information or use the organization's approved confirmation. The sender closes the exchange or escalates after a missed or wrong acknowledgement.

A received icon or audible sound does not prove understanding. Define the maximum acceptable time for the selected job.

Use text as a confirmation only if that workflow has passed its own test.

Protect attention and movement

No user should operate a phone while driving, climbing, signaling a lift, using machinery or performing another safety-critical task. Assign a communicator or require a safe stop.

Test gloves, screen lock and carrying position without asking users to defeat PPE or attention controls.

A product pass must include safe use, not merely audible output.

Set acceptance criteria

Define required zones, phrases, users, PPE, configurations and correct-understanding threshold before testing. Include wrong-message and no-acknowledgement actions.

A failed result may require noise control, a different approved audio accessory, a quiet checkpoint, shorter standard phrases, text confirmation or another authorized communication system.
