Belt, Backpack, or Vehicle: Where to Place the J25 Terminal

A phone-paired LoRa mesh terminal is easy to misrepresent in photographs. If a model holds the device in front of the face like a walkie-talkie, buyers may misunderstand both the product workflow and the intended carrying position.
In the current J25 architecture, the smartphone remains the interface while J25 is carried on the body, pack or equipment. The exact placement can affect access, Bluetooth connection, antenna environment, weather exposure and compliance with the product instructions.
This guide explains how to evaluate carrying positions. It does not define the approved accessory or body position for a future ChatField product.
Short answer
Carry the terminal only in a position and accessory supported by the exact product instructions and compliance documentation. Test the real belt, shoulder strap, pack pocket or equipment mount planned for the job.
Keep the phone accessible to the assigned user without requiring unsafe operation. Do not hold a carried terminal like a conventional radio unless the product specifically requires that action.
Understand the two-device workflow
The phone provides the user interface. The terminal provides the supported local radio link. Bluetooth connects the phone to its nearby terminal.
This means placement must support both phone access and radio operation. A terminal hidden deep inside gear may remain paired yet produce a different radio path from an exposed approved position.

Start with the manufacturer instructions
Review approved carrying accessories, antenna orientation, minimum separation, RF-exposure information, environmental limits and any warnings about connectors or charging.
FCC KDB guidance addresses RF-exposure evaluation for mobile and portable devices, including body-worn use conditions. Buyers should not invent a zero-separation or body position that the filing and instructions do not support.

Test a belt position
A belt position can provide access and a consistent height. The body, clothing, tools and vehicle seat can change orientation or cover the device.
Test standing, walking, crouching and sitting. Check whether the terminal catches on equipment, presses against the body or becomes inaccessible under a jacket.
Record the exact clip or pouch and antenna orientation.
Test a shoulder-strap position
A shoulder strap may place the device higher and outside some pack contents. It can also expose it to rain, movement and contact with other gear.
Verify that the mount does not release during walking and that connectors are protected. Test Bluetooth connection to the phone's normal pocket.
Do not assume a higher position always produces a better result; repeat the route.
Test an outer pack pocket
An outer pocket can protect the terminal from impact while keeping it nearer the outside of the pack. Water bottles, metal tools, food containers and the user's body can still affect the environment.
Use the real packed load. Mark the pocket so users return the device to the approved orientation.
A deep central compartment should be tested separately and should not be chosen only for visual neatness.
Test an equipment or vehicle mount
A mount can create consistent placement for a vehicle, site or asset. It also introduces metal, power cables, vibration, heat, theft and installation questions.
Use only approved mounting and antenna arrangements. Record whether the product is operated as portable, mobile or another documented configuration.

Keep the antenna area clear
Do not cover or modify the antenna area unless the instructions allow it. The body, metal and dense equipment can affect radio performance.
Compare approved positions at the same route checkpoints. Preserve stable, marginal and failed results.
Never attach an unapproved external antenna to improve a demonstration.
Verify Bluetooth stability
Move the phone between the intended pocket, hand and mount while the terminal remains in place. Lock the screen, walk and perform normal tasks.
Record disconnection warning, reconnection time and user action. A good LoRa path cannot compensate for a lost phone-to-terminal connection in a phone-paired workflow.

Protect access and controls
The user should reach required controls without removing safety equipment or looking away from a hazardous task. Assign a communicator where phone interaction would be unsafe.
Do not operate the phone while driving, climbing, handling machinery or crossing a hazard. Stop at an approved checkpoint.
NHTSA guidance warns that phone interaction diverts attention from driving.
Plan for weather and contamination
Rain, dust, mud, salt and temperature require model-specific evidence and instructions. A carrying pouch does not create an IP rating.
Inspect ports, covers and accessories. Dry and clean the device only as instructed.

Check retention and loss
Walk, bend and perform representative work with an unloaded safety test. Verify that the device remains attached and does not interfere with movement.
Use an approved tether only if supported. Record serial or asset identifiers and define the response to a lost terminal.
Standardize the team position
After testing, choose one or more approved positions for each role. Photograph the correct setup, list the accessory and train users to recognize wrong orientation or obstruction.
Consistency makes route results easier to interpret and reduces variation between users.

Current J25 carrying boundary
Current J25 public materials state that the phone remains the interface and J25 can stay on the body, pack or equipment instead of being used like a handheld walkie-talkie. The final approved position must still follow current product and compliance instructions.
