How Far Can ChatField J25 Communicate? Reading 5 km and 10 km Range Evidence

The most common range question is also one of the easiest to answer badly. A single distance printed on a product page cannot describe every route, building, hill, vehicle, antenna position, message type, radio configuration or user behavior.

Current ChatField J25 evidence includes 5 km in urban-obstructed testing and up to 10 km in ideal open terrain. These are two different evidence conditions. Neither is a promise that every buyer will reproduce the same distance, and the open-terrain figure should not be copied into a city, forest, building or underground use case.

Short answer

Use 5 km urban-obstructed and up to 10 km ideal open terrain as planning evidence, not a universal guarantee. Test the exact route, device placement, phones, regional hardware, application and message workflow before purchase or deployment. Record stable, marginal and failed checkpoints in both directions.

What the two figures mean

The J25 specifications and evidence page should be read with the test conditions and model identity, not as a standalone headline.

Why range changes from one route to another

Radio performance can change with terrain, building materials, below-grade positions, vegetation, vehicle bodies, local noise, terminal orientation, carrying height, motion, weather exposure, regional settings and how the user positions the equipment. The weakest part of a route may matter more than the straight-line distance.

A campground office to a hilltop cabin, a warehouse gate to a loading area, and a city street between high-rise buildings may all have the same map distance and produce different results.

Do not confuse map radius with route coverage

Drawing a 10 km circle around a base point assumes that every direction has the same terrain and obstruction. Real field work follows roads, trails, buildings, valleys and work zones. Procurement should identify the actual checkpoints where communication is required.

Record the route length and the direct distance separately. Include device height, indoor or outdoor position, vehicle state and whether users were stationary or moving.

Test the complete phone-to-phone result

For current J25 use, the smartphone is the interface. Bluetooth connects the phone to the carried J25 terminal. The configured terminal carries supported traffic through the local LoRa mesh to another equipped terminal and paired phone.

A radio indicator alone is not the acceptance result. Confirm that the intended recipient can receive and understand the supported PTT, text, image or location workflow on the paired phone. The phone alone does not transmit LoRa, and the terminal is not held like a conventional walkie-talkie.

Build a direct-path baseline first

  1. Choose a safe start point and a series of representative checkpoints.
  2. Use the exact phones, application build, J25 hardware, firmware and regional configuration intended for the pilot.
  3. Confirm Bluetooth pairing and device power before leaving the start point.
  4. Test in both directions at each checkpoint.
  5. Record delivery, delay, PTT understanding, acknowledgement, device position and surrounding conditions.
  6. Repeat marginal points instead of accepting one lucky result.

Direct testing shows what the route can do without relying on an additional participating node. It also creates a baseline for later relay evaluation.

Use relay nodes carefully

For current J25 planning, evaluate no more than two participating relay nodes where the tested layout and configuration permit. A relay must be an equipped, powered, correctly configured participant in a useful location. It is not an abstract multiplier.

Do not calculate “10 km times three” and advertise a 30 km route. Each segment has its own obstruction, placement, power and availability. The end-to-end result is only as dependable as the tested path and operating procedure.

A useful relay test removes or powers down one participating node and confirms the expected failure, rerouting behavior where supported, user indication and fallback.

Define pass, marginal and fail before testing

A purchase team should decide what counts as acceptable before seeing the result. One example:

  • Pass: the intended message reaches the correct recipient within the agreed time and is correctly understood on repeated trials.
  • Marginal: delivery is inconsistent, delayed beyond the agreed threshold, requires repositioning or produces unclear PTT.
  • Fail: the intended workflow does not complete or the user cannot confirm the correct result.

Choose thresholds that match the operational task. A routine location update and a time-sensitive voice instruction may need different criteria.

Separate technical delivery from operational understanding

A packet can arrive while the recipient misses the message, hears unclear speech, sees the wrong group or misunderstands the instruction. Record delivery and human understanding as separate fields.

Test with the expected noise, gloves, phone mounting, vehicles and approved personal protective equipment without creating an unsafe condition. Stop vehicles before reading or typing.

What FCC evidence does and does not add

Current public J25 evidence includes FCC ID 2BVP9-J25. Equipment authorization helps identify the tested radio equipment and applicable compliance evidence. It does not certify a 5 km or 10 km route, guarantee field coverage, approve every destination market or validate a buyer's application workflow.
