A phone-paired terminal can use the smartphone as the interface while providing a local radio link between equipped team members. This may be relevant when teams need supported messaging, voice, or location workflows without relying on a cellular tower for the local connection.

What the phone still does
In a phone-paired system, the smartphone remains part of the issued communication kit. Procurement teams should test the exact phone models, operating-system versions, app permissions, Bluetooth pairing, reconnection, restart recovery, screen visibility, protective cases, charging method, and user procedure planned for the field.

How to test the actual route
Choose representative endpoints such as a yard, warehouse edge, hill, concrete structure, work corridor, farm block, coastline, or remote road. Test at realistic device positions and repeat the same route so results can be compared.
For J25, the permitted public language is up to 10 km in ideal open terrain and about 5 km in tests involving urban high-rise and structural obstruction. Buyers may evaluate up to two participating relay nodes. These are evaluation references, not guarantees. Terrain, structures, interference, device position, node placement, and deployment method can materially change results.

Build an operating procedure around the equipment
Roster and ownership
Record which user, phone, terminal, cable, and power accessory belong to each issued kit. Assign a supervisor for check-ins and define who takes over during a shift change.

Define routine status, welfare concern, operational urgency, and emergency escalation. State which communication method to try, what information to include, how long to wait, and what backup method applies when the local link is unavailable.
Power readiness
Test the phone and terminal together for the planned activity and shift. Record starting charge, activity level, charging events, and remaining charge. A controlled result should not be converted into a universal battery-life claim.
Training and recovery
Give users a short written procedure and test initial setup, reconnecting after separation, restarting the phone or terminal, recovering from a missed message, and handing the kit to another user.

J28 is a separate development program. J25 evidence must not be used to claim finalized J28 certification, specifications, production availability, or deployment.
A practical B2B acceptance matrix
For each requirement, record the test method, route, threshold, result, evidence file, tester, and decision. Use pass, fail, or retest rather than “mostly works.” Critical requirements—especially a required escalation workflow—should be separated from convenience features.
A buyer should approve a deployment only when the evidence matches the operating requirement and the remaining limitations are accepted in writing.
